Plan Sunscreen Reapplication for an Outdoor Day

A sun-protection plan needs to account for the entire outing, not just leaving the house. Swimming, sweating and towel drying can change when reapplication is needed.

Start with a practical check

Read your sunscreen’s directions and bring enough for the group. The AAD advises reapplying outdoors about every two hours and after swimming or sweating; follow the product’s additional directions.

Understand the tradeoff

A reminder can help, but it does not replace reading the label or using shade and clothing. Water-resistant products still need reapplication.

A real-world decision

For a picnic followed by a walk, pack sunscreen where you can reach it instead of leaving it in an inaccessible bag. Plan shade breaks as part of the outing.

Before you decide

Keep the packaging and directions available, and distinguish personal preferences from health concerns. The best purchase is one that fits your needs and can be used as directed. You do not need to add a product simply because it appears in someone else’s routine.
