Sunscreen Expiration and Storage: A Simple Check
Sunscreen is not a product to keep indefinitely. Age, labeling and storage conditions matter when deciding whether the bottle is ready for another season.

Start with a practical check
Check the printed expiration date. FDA guidance says a sunscreen without an expiration date should be considered expired three years after purchase. Write the purchase date on undated packaging.
Understand the tradeoff
Appearance alone cannot confirm that an old sunscreen still provides its labeled protection. Follow storage instructions and do not rely on a bottle whose age is unknown.
A real-world decision
If a bottle has lived in a bag for several summers and you cannot establish when it was purchased, replace it rather than guessing from how much remains.
Before you decide
Keep the packaging and directions available, and distinguish personal preferences from health concerns. The best purchase is one that fits your needs and can be used as directed. You do not need to add a product simply because it appears in someone else’s routine.
