Buying thoughtfully
Read Beauty Claims Without Treating Them as Proof
Terms on the front of a package can sound more precise than they are. Claims should lead you to the details of the product rather than replace them.

Start with a practical check
Read the ingredient list, directions and manufacturer explanations. FDA cautions that terms such as natural and hypoallergenic do not establish that a cosmetic cannot cause a reaction.
Understand the tradeoff
A familiar ingredient name or a dramatic before-and-after image does not tell you the whole formula, study conditions or whether the result applies to you.
A real-world decision
When a claim sounds unusually impressive, ask what was measured and where the supporting information can be found. If those details are unavailable, do not treat the phrase as a guarantee.
Before you decide
Keep the packaging and directions available, and distinguish personal preferences from health concerns. The best purchase is one that fits your needs and can be used as directed. You do not need to add a product simply because it appears in someone else’s routine.
